With Klaus Laitenberg
Date: Sunday 30th April
Venue: Behind the Thatched Cottages, Tullycross
Organic gardener Klaus Laitenberger will spend the afternoon planting potatoes as in days gone by. Manure or seaweed is spread onto the grass and seed potatoes laid on top of it and then the soil is folded over. This is a unique Irish technique – seen nowhere else in the world and possibly about to die out. Some old farmers and gardeners still have the knowledge and the skill and Klaus hopes they will join in on the day. Here in Connemara there are plenty remnants of old “lazy beds” visible on hills and mountains.
Please bring along wellies and have a go and if you have an old time spade Klaus would love to see it as well.
Klaus Laitenberger was once the Head Gardener at the Organic Centre at Rossinver, Co. Leitrim and now lectures at University college Cork on organic horticulture, food production and more. He is also an organic farming inspector and his 20 plus years experience of growing food organically has led him in recent years to write 3 books on growing vegetables and not surprisingly they soon all became best sellers. The books have attained rave reviews from other horticulturists and top gardening newspaper & magazine writers and other gardeners alike.
