Joe Hogan has been making baskets at Loch Na Fooey, Co. Galway since 1978. He was initially attracted to basketmaking because it offered the possibility of living rurally and being involved in the whole process from growing the willow through to making. An interest in the indigenous baskets of Ireland led him to write Basketmaking in Ireland, published in 2001. This work is prompted by a desire to develop a deeper connection to the natural world. Recent awards include overall award of excellence and California gold medal at RDS national crafts competition, 2013 and Loewe craft prize shortlist 2018.
Joan Johnson is currently researching a local history story on ‘Sophia Sturge and the Connemara Basket Industry in Letterfrack [888-1905’ (a story as yet untold). Joan will talk on her recent research when she travelled to the UK during the summer of 2018. Over the last 10 years she has given talks in Dublin, Clifden, Letterfrack, Westport and Waterford.
