Seaweed Farming in Connemara and Beyond – Folklore, History and the Landscape Archaeology explored

Another fascinating title and talk from renowned Connemara Archaeologist, Michael Gibbons. It relates to a very important piece of folklore from Ballinakill Bay, recorded early in the last century, concerning two fairy kings and seaweed rights on the bay:

Is mise Rí  Dhúinín Mhóir a deir duine acu agus is mise Rí Cathair a Dúin a dubhairt a duine eile agus tá muintir a riogh seo a deir se  agus tá siad  a nocht agus a bhaint an fheamainn nach bhfuil leobh  chora bith a dubhairt sé. Tá siad a tíocht trasna a deir sé go Cathair a Dúin ghá baint agus tá muintir Ríogh Chatair a Dúin ag tíocht trasna go dtí an Dúinín Mór a baint feamainne a deir an fear eile. Socróchaidh mise an cheist sin daoibh a dubhairt a fear tastil má ghlacann sibh leis.
